Demand the Federal Government and EPA prioritize protecting our health

As you know, we are in the midst of a public health crisis where communities are looking to your leadership in order to stay safe and healthy. Therefore, I urge you to drop your attacks on clean car standards at once in order to ensure national health and safety.

The proposed Safer-Affordable Fuel Efficient (SAFE) Vehicles Rule will result in nearly a billion additional metric tons of carbon emissions. The rollback clearly points to advancing reckless policies that harm the future of the economy and the health of people. Gutting these standards will be more costly for consumers who will have to spend more money on gas and negatively impact carmakers, cutting thousands of jobs in the clean car industry.

According to an Environmental Defense Fund analysis, the reversal will also have devastating effects on the health of the public which is already suffering in unprecedented ways during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The proposed SAFE Vehicles Rule will result in a total of:

  • 18,500 premature deaths

  • 250,000 more asthma attacks

  • 350,000 other respiratory problems

  • $190 billion health costs between now and 2050

These health outcomes will most negatively impact those already suffering the most from COVID-19. Our elderly and vulnerable communities need the EPA to step up and protect their health more rigorously at this time.

We are therefore asking the Environmental Protection Agency to do their job “to protect human health and the environment” and reverse this rollback. If not reversed, the EPA needs to publicly disclose when and why companies cease monitoring and reporting on pollution emissions.

At the federal level, we need this rollback dropped immediately. We urge you to redirect the energy you’re using to support corporations back on the people who need it most right now during the COVID-19 crisis.
