Environmental Justice Permitting

Illinois has perpetuated environmental racism through budgeting, redlining, and barriers to public engagement. Current zoning laws have shaped land use practices across the state and environmental justice (EJ) communities—often BIPOC and working-class—are home to the highest concentrations of air, water and land pollution. This environmental injustice has caused tangible health impacts such as disproportionate rates of respiratory health issues.

Being considered now in the IL General Assembly is a bill—Environmental Justice Permitting (HB4093/SB2906)—that would take meaningful action to address the historic legacy of environmental racism that has persisted in communities of color in Illinois for generations.
