I’m at the State Capitol building in Springfield today as our state legislators are currently meeting for a special session.
I urgently need your help.
Earlier this month, both the Senate and the House overwhelmingly passed environmental justice resolutions that support funding for the Illinois Solar for All program – a breakthrough new program created by the Future Energy Jobs Act that would create job training programs and expand access to solar energy and solar jobs to economically disadvantaged communities.
However, a budget proposal by Senate Republicans – and endorsed by Gov. Rauner – would sweep every penny of the $185 million designated for the Illinois Solar for All program.
The funds in the RERF were collected from utility bills (not tax dollars) and were intended for use for projects that will create jobs and expand access to solar energy. They should be used as such.
A sweep of the RERF funds would mean the end of the Illinois Solar for All program. An end to a job training pipeline for economically-disadvantaged communities and those who face barriers to employment (particularly persons with criminal records and foster care alumni). An end to money-saving solar energy available equitably to communities across the state. An end to an opportunity to reduce pollution and asthma through renewable energy.
We need our state legislators to pass a responsible budget that helps communities with job training, education, public health, and economic and environmental justice – rather than taking these things away.
Please contact your state legislator today and ask them to protect RERF dollars for the Solar for All program!
